Lucasfilm Still Mulling Over Star Wars Spinoffs For Yoda And Boba Fett

Get the Full StoryBuried in The Hollywood Reporter’s scoop concerning Obi-Wan Kenobi spoilers: the wise old Jedi Master is finally about to get his own spinoff! was an all-too-brief update regarding those fabled Star Wars anthology movies for Yoda and Boba Fett.

They’re still on the table, essentially, with THR noting that Lucasfilm is still “considering movies centering on Yoda and bounty hunter Boba Fett, among other characters.” Exactly who or what those other characters are, though, is a total mystery at this early stage and frankly, given the embryonic Obi-Wan pic is currently without a script – word is Stephen Daldry has entered negotiations to direct – don’t expect any firm answers to arise anytime soon.

And that’s really been the case for Disney and Lucasfilm’s current Star Wars slate. Perhaps in fear of undermining the likes of The Last Jedi, Episode IX, and Ron Howard’s Han Solo spinoff, both parties have maintained a thick veil of secrecy over any and all future plans for their galaxy far, far away. There will be more Star Wars movies in 2020 and beyond, of course, so the real question is how the Mouse House plans to arrange its deck.

With news that Obi-Wan Kenobi has taken those formative steps toward the limelight, it’s all but certain that Lucasfilm brass has earmarked the Jedi Master for their next Star Wars standalone movie post-2019. Originally portrayed by the late, great Alec Guinness before Ewan McGregor took the reins for episodes I, II, and III, Obi-Wan is undoubtedly one of the most beloved characters populating Lucasfilm’s franchise, so it’s really a question of when, rather than if, he’ll get his own spinoff.

As for Yoda and Boba Fett, though, it’ll be interesting to gauge how the Powers That Be approach each potential offshoot, especially given that the former will be anchored by a cult alien as opposed to a regular old human. Details are still thin on the ground, but make no mistake: The Force continues to be strong in Disney and Lucasfilm.

Next up is the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 15th of this year.
