First Combat Jiu Jitsu Worlds set for November 12th with Tonon, Miller, Danzig

Get the Full StoryThe eight-man tournament features Garry Tonon, Cole Miller, Mac Danzig, and more. The evolution of competitive grappling continues to flourish from the camp led by industry leader, Eddie Bravo. The movement started with the Eddie Bravo Invitational and now that has transitioned into the spectacle known as Combat Jiu Jitsu. What began as an addition to EBI has developed into a full-fledged tournament with a world title on the line in November.

Combat Jiu Jitsu is a blend of grappling and striking. The rule set allows for fighters to use open hand slaps to any part of their opponents when the fight is on the ground. While on the feet, standard grappling rules apply. But it s the action on the floor that creates an interesting dynamic. Competitors trade blows to produce openings that allow them to improve position, lock in a match-ending submission, or fight their way out of one. While one may think that open-handed slaps aren t dangerous, fighters need to be wary that taking one too many can cause the match to end via a technical knockout much akin to what happens in the realm of mixed martial arts.

In early August the first CJJ Worlds event was announced via Instagram and the bracket features a mix of names interesting to both fans of grappling and mixed martial arts.

MMA is well represented in this tournament. Cole Miller, Mac Danzig, Vagner Rocha and Diego Brandao are four men that should be familiar with fans of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Each one of them have an extensive background in the cage, but what may not be as well-known is their upbringing in grappling. Each of them brings a full range of skills to put on display during the tournament. It will be interesting to see if their familiarity with striking while grappling gives them a competitive edge over those that don t have the same exposure.

They will be met by some of the best competitive grapplers in the world. Three-time EBI champion Garry Tonon is confirmed for the event along with a host of other EBI veterans. That group includes AJ Agazarm, Nathan Orchard and Rafael Domingos. Each one of these men brings in an aggressive, submission-based style that isn t readily available in MMA and creates compelling matchups across the board.

The first Combat Jiu Jitsu Worlds event is set for Sunday, November 12. It has yet to be announced if this event will be available on UFC Fight Pass, but more information is to come as the date gets closer.
