The drama started in June, when it was announced that James' former King of Queens co-star Leah Remini who had guest-starred in Season 1 as Vanessa, Kevin's former partner would be joining the series full-time in Season 2. "Obviously, the chemistry between Kevin and Leah was amazing in the stunt episodes that we did at the end of last season, and we decided to look to continue that chemistry," Sherman said.Later that month, Kevin Can Wait executive producer Rob Long told TVLine Donna was being killed off "out of respect for the character ... and certainly the way that Erinn Hayes portrayed her."
