Canelo Alvarez vs. Rocky Fielding preview and full fight week coverage

Get the Full StoryUnified middleweight king Canelo Alvarez is moving up to super-middleweight for a one-off fight with WBA regular champion Rocky Fielding. Get your fight week coverage here on Bloody Elbow. For the first time in his career, Canelo Alvarez 50-1-2, 34 KOs will be moving up to 168 lbs, as he takes on WBA regular super-middleweight champion Rocky Fielding 27-1, 15 KOs at Madison Square Garden in New York.

After a thrilling majority decision win over Gennady Golovkin, middleweight champion Alvarez opted to sign with DAZN on an 11-fight, 365 million mega contract. Technically speaking, it s 10 fights and 350 million, and the one-off he s having with Fielding at 168 lbs is presumably a 15 million guarantee. He intends to return to middleweight in 2019, but felt there was no need to cut weight to get to 160 twice in a three-month span.

Alvarez is one of boxing s biggest stars, but he s never fought at MSG, and he s fulfilling that dream this Saturday night. He ll be a heavy favorite against Fielding, whose regular title is the second-tier belt in the WBA s obscene belt structure that makes them arguably the worst of the four major sanctioning bodies. The Englishman does have a couple of respectable wins at the weight class, including a TKO of Tyron Zeuge in Germany five months ago to win that version of the belt. His only career loss was a first-round KO to WBA super champion Callum Smith. Fielding is certainly not a top-5 super-middleweight, but he s probably towards the bottom of the top-10, so it s theoretically a mismatch, but Fielding is hardly some club fighter.

Also on the card is IBF junior lightweight champion Tevin Farmer against Francisco Fonseca, a co-main event between David Lemieux and Tureano Johnson that should produce fireworks, and women s boxing star and unified lightweight champion Katie Taylor against Eva Wahlstr m. Golden Boy prospects Vergil Ortiz he s one of my personal prospects to watch in 2019 and Ryan Garcia are both on the card in separate bouts, while former world champion Sadam Ali returns against veteran Mauricio Herrera.

Bloody Elbow will have full fight week coverage, including preview, a live stream of the undercard, results, post-fight highlights, and more. The DAZN broadcast starts at 6 PM ET 3 PM PT and the main card begins at 8 PM ET 5 PM PT.
