But Ini Kamoze born name: Cecil Campbell earwormed his way into my head in 1994 when his biggest hit Here Comes The Hotstepper was put into the soundtrack for Robert Altman s Pr t- -Porter, or as trashy, uncouth Americans called it, Ready To Wear or Pret-uh-Porr-turr. Nothing made me feel like a refined gay like Pret-uh-Portay twirling off of my tongue while buying tickets at the movie theater. If tongues had pinkies, my tongue pinky would raise while saying Pr t- -Porter. But that s not the point of this post, the point is to pay tribute to Ini Kamoze and his thermometer-breaking steps!
In Here Comes The Hotstepper, Ini lets everyone know that he murders tricks with his lyrics, and he s not lying, because I know what Bo don t know! Touch them up and go, uh-oh! pushed me into the casket, and Ch-ch-chang chang brought me back to life. The Hotstepper is so bold that he can hot step by a police officer, tell the officer that he still loves him, and low-key holler out murderer twice at the cop.

Hotstepper hit #1 on the US Hot 100 chart, and it also got Ini a seven-album deal with Elektra Records. The Lyrical Gangsta still makes music today, but Hotstepper still remains his opus. And it is a masterpiece and a mood setter, because as soon as you hear nah, na na na nah at the beginning, you can t help but hotstep all over the neighborhood, and whisper murderer at an officer after greeting him. And once he arrests you for that, make sure to make every step to your jail cell at least 101 degrees Fahrenheit.
