Here s The First Look At Greta Gerwig s Little Women
Get the Full StoryI know that s the title of the book the film is based on, but it could also double as the store where they bought those hats. It looks like three out of four of the March sisters stole their hats off American Girl dolls? Perhaps this question will be answered when Greta Gerwig s version of Little Women hits theaters, but for now all we have are tiny hats and a picture of Timoth e Chalamet as Laurie.Vanity Fair released the exclusive first pictures of Little Women, a movie that is coming out because apparently the perfect 1994 version doesn t exist anymore. At least we can be sure this version won t be anywhere near as questionable as last year s adaptation, and that might be because this one doesn t have a Hallmark budget cast. Above we ve got Emma Watson as Meg Emma Stone was originally rumored to play Meg , Florence Pugh as Amy, Saoirse Ronan as Jo, and Eliza Scanlen as Beth. Joining them are Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March, which will probably earn her a 400th Oscar nomination. Meryl was rumored to be playing Marmee, but that s obviously not the case.

This Little Women is set in the year and location it happens Civil War-era Boston. But according to Greta, Laurie and Jo are gender fluid this time around. Someone call Taylor Swift she d be thrilled to learn that every white girl s favorite book report story now has an LGBTQ twist.
Jo is a girl with a boy s name, Laurie is a boy with a girl s name, Gerwig pointed out. In some ways they are each other s twins. A subtle connection between the two in the film is their wardrobe; costume designer Jacqueline Durran had them swap articles of clothing throughout the story.
They find each other before they ve committed to a gender, Gerwig adds. It wouldn t be wrong to call Saoirse handsome and Timoth e beautiful. Both have a slightly androgynous quality that makes them perfect for these characters.
Saoirse adds that they didn t want to label the author, Louisa May Alcott, as anything while filming the movie it s not that hard to find someone on the internet that believes Jo, who was based on Louisa, was a lesbian . But that they wanted to explore as much of Louisa s real story as possible. And part of that involves Timoth e in a deconstructed version of Seinfeld s puffy pirate shirt. It s still miles better than what Timoth e wears when he s allowed to dress himself.
