Olivia Wilde Speaks Out About Richard Jewell Controversy

Get the Full StoryClint Eastwood s movie Richard Jewell caused a bunch of controversy before it came out because it claimed that Atlantic Journal-Constitution journalist Kathy Scruggs had sex with an FBI agent played by Jon Hamm for information about the case involving Richard Jewell the security guard who was accused of planting the bombs at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta . That caused AJC to ask Warner Bros. to put a disclaimer in the movie saying that events were faked for dramatic purposes, because there is no proof that Kathy traded sex for story tips. Olivia has now decided to speak out about this mess. Olivia defended Kathy Scruggs who can t defend herself since she died in 2001.

Olivia let us know on Twitter that since her mother Leslie Cockburn is a journalist, she is very pro-journalist and does not think that Kathy traded sex for information. In her mind, Kathy was in a relationship with the FBI dude and he gave her bullshit info. Olivia says that if after filming the editors made choices to paint Kathy in any other way, that s really out of her hands. She also said that suggestions Kathy really did do this were appalling and misogynistic . She wrote:

I was asked to play the supporting role of Kathy Scruggs, who was, by all accounts, bold, smart, and fearlessly undeterred by the challenge of being a female reporter in the south in the 1990s. I cannot even contemplate the amount of sexism she may have faced in the way of duty.

Contrary to a swath of recent headlines, I do not believe that Kathy traded sex for tips . Nothing in my research suggested she did so, and it was never my intention to suggest she had. That would be an appalling and misogynistic dismissal of the difficult work she did.

I cannot speak for the creative decisions made by the filmmakers, as I did not have a say in how the film was ultimately crafted, but it s important to me that I share my personal take on the matter.

Warner Bros. of course is standing by Clint Eastwood and screenwriter, Billy Ray not Cyrus , and have given statements saying that they think the AJC is just making fake news again. They said that AJC were trying to: malign our filmmakers and cast. Well one of the cast just maligned you too, so Also, Warner Bros. is so sure of all the wide range of highly credible source material that they still put a disclaimer at the end of the movie saying:

The film is based on actual historical events. Dialogue and certain events and characters contained in the film were created for the purposes of dramatization.

Well this will teach Clint Eastwood; using a real-life actress to portray his sexed-up reporter. Didn t he realize Olivia could voice an opinion after the fact? The next time he sets out to smear a woman as a huss, he ll just have to do what he did with that baby in American Sniper and use a fake one. Actually, I just heard of a sex doll who would totally smear a journalist s reputation and not be able to say anything about it afterward:
