The Queen Is Having A Hard Time Writing Her Annual Christmas Speech

Get the Full StoryEvery year on Christmas Day, Queen Elizabeth gives an end-of-year speech, where she reflects on the joys and memories of the passing year. The only problem is that 2019 was the kind of year that would make The Queen wish she could bump her own Christmas Day broadcast with an infomercial for crown polish.

A royal source told Vanity Fair that The Queen is still on her first draft of her speech, with just 12 days till go time. And apparently it s all because the year was a mess, both in her family and in the UK.

The year started off with a bang literally. 97-year-old Prince Philip got into a car accident and flipped his Land Rover. Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry broke her unofficial mantra of Never complain, never explain by going on television and complaining that the British press have made their lives a living hell, and explaining that he doesn t really talk to his older brother Prince William, and by launching lawsuits against the press.

Princess Anne might have gotten caught laughing it up with other world leaders about Donald Trump. There s the whole Brexit thing. Then in the middle of the year, Matt Lucas character Boris Johnson took over from Theresa May as Prime Minister of the UK, and subsequently won by a landslide in their recent election. And finally, The Queen s alleged favorite son, Prince Andrew repeatedly fumbled his way around his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein and the allegations made by Virginia Giuffre that she was allegedly sex trafficked by Epstein, and forced to have sex with Andrew when she was 17 years old. Andrew has since stepped away was unceremoniously pushed out of his official duties.

According to Vanity Fair s source, The Queen isn t that excited to write her speech, because well, see above. And the mood around the palace isn t helping.

We don t know what the queen plans to say because we haven t seen the speech yet. It s still at a first-draft stage because of the election, but it probably hasn t been the easiest speech to write. It has been a very difficult time behind the scenes, and morale is at a bit of a low.

The whole Andrew thing is made worse by the fact that it won t be magically disappearing at the stroke of midnight on December 31st. So The Queen is also going into her speech knowing that 2020 could potentially be just as shitty.

Another source says that Harry and Meghan are not-so-secretly thrilled to be escaping the drama by spending Christmas in Los Angeles with Meghan s mother. Prince Andrew is expected to join The Queen at Sandringham for Christmas, and the rumor is that he ll make the annual public walk to church with the rest of the family on Christmas Day.

But Vanity Fair points out that there are some nice things The Queen can talk about. Like the fact that her granddaughter Princess Beatrice is engaged, or that her latest great-grandchild, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, was born. So maybe she ll just focus on that. After all, The Queen isn t really known for confronting things head-on. But she also can t lie and say 2019 was a wonderful end to the decade. I would not at all be surprised if the camera opened on The Queen lighting a pile of garbage on fire, saying, There you go that s pretty much the year in a nutshell. Now who wants to see my gold piano?
