Amazon is reportedly taking its first major step into the luxury fashion space, according to WWD.

The online retailer has been slowly building its focus on fashion over the past few years.

Business Insider previously reported that Amazon teamed up with Vogue for an online store showcasing independent designers.

The 12 brands reportedly joining the new platform are said to be higher-end than those involved with the earlier Vogue x Amazon initiative.

Amazon is forging ahead with plans for a luxury brand platform, with the first of a dozen international accessories and ready-to-wear labels opening shops on the site as fashion show season kicks off in September, WWD has learned.

The labels, which hail from Europe and the U.S., will operate their own concessions on the site with a business model that's more similar to the Farfetch marketplace than Net-a-porter or Matchesfashion.See the rest of the story at Business InsiderNOW WATCH: Why YETI coolers are so expensiveSee Also:Tiffany will now tell you exactly where your diamond came fromHow a 28-year-old became one of the most buzzed-about luxury jewelry designers in the world, with an elite list of clients that includes RihannaMillennials don't want high-end furniture because they're constantly moving, according to a renowned designer who's been in the business for decadesSEE ALSO: Amazon is teaming up with Vogue for an online store showcasing independent luxury designers, but some say it signals a 'bleak' future for fashion
