The 2021 Oscars Will Be An In-Person Telecast And Not Held Virtually

Get the Full StorySeveral award shows have happened during quarantine and most of them like the Emmys and the MTV VMAs were social-distanced and virtual, and others like the CMAs were not virtual and held in one theater. The 2021 Oscars are going for the latter. Is anyone shocked? Rich people have been having parties, and dressing up, and seeing family members for holidays nothing s different for them by this point, why would they not host their huge annual actor-on-actor circle jerk?

Variety says that the 93rd Academy Awards will not be virtual. A rep for the Academy and ABC told Variety:

The Oscars in-person telecast will happen.

But it will be different. I don t think there will be anyone dressed up as a hazmat golden statue but I m sure they ll make those nameless well-dressed peons who direct people off-stage wear a mask. Firstly, the Oscars was pushed back two months to April 25 the Academy extended the eligibility timeline from December 31 to February 28, 2021. They also are hoping springtime brings better coronavirus numbers, and hopefully, the vaccine will be in full swing by then and helping to bring the numbers down.

And with movie theatres closed, there will be more online releases in contention. It s gonna be tons of Netflix, honey Steven Spielberg is going to have a fucking aneurysm.

The Academy has already been looking around Los Angeles 3,400-seat Dolby Theatre to scope out how to safely not infect every single member of the Hollywood upper-class. A source told Variety:

The Academy has done a walkthrough of the Dolby recently to see all the multiple options.

A rep for the Dolby Theatre declined to comment about what their safety precautions will be, but they may get some tips from the Golden Globes, which is scheduled for February 28, 2021. Back in July, the Golden Globes said that they will go ahead with a live show held at the Beverly Hilton and once again hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler . But the Golden Globes people declined to comment further to Variety.

The SAG Awards, which will happen in March, is singing a different tune and hasn t ruled out a virtual show:

For our show, we re looking at a variety of options. Our submission period has just closed, but numbers are on par with previous years, and we are looking forward to a strong competition this awards season. We are excited to honor this year s outstanding performances in both film and television in March. And like our colleagues at other awards shows, we are working to create an entertaining and safe show for all of our nominees.

The Critics Choice Awards feels the same way CEO and President of the Critics Choice Association, Joey Berlin, said:

We know the show is happening. Taye Diggs will be on stage. There are three possibilities. It s the Emmys, it s like the Critics Choice Awards last year, or it s a hybrid. It doesn t seem likely that on March 7, most of our nominees and eventual winners are going to be happy to gather somewhere.

I don t know why these people are being so modest. It s A-list Hollywood! Aren t there like Playstation 6s in the gift bags? Just do what Kim Kardashian West or Diddy did and rent out a private island. Live, from Turks and Caicos, it s the 93rd Academy Awards!
