The SAG Awards Will Be Pre-Taped And Very Short This YearGet the Full StoryI am not a religious person, but I did just drop to my knees, slap my hands together and cried, Bless whatever benevolent and kind angel decided that this year s ceremony should be a tight 60. Because today s example of love is the SAG Awards for deciding to have a very short and pre-taped ceremony this year.
After getting bumped and moved a couple times, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are scheduled to air on Sunday, April 4th. And maybe someone at the SAGs heard the news that the good people at home don t really want to watch celebrities struggle to use their laptop cameras for thee hours, because they decided to revamp this year s show. The SAG Awards celebrate the best in television and film acting from the past year, and they ll still do so. But it s going to be quick n tidy, with a deliberate accent on the quick. via Variety:
Executive producers Todd Milliner, Sean Hayes yes that Sean Hayes , and Kathy Connell have revealed to Variety that next month s ceremony will be pre-taped, including winner reveals, and be limited to just a one-hour running time.
We re looking at trying to do a unique award ceremony in an hour and leave people saying, which they very rarely do with an awards show , Man, I wish we had more,' Milliner said.
Variety explains that the SAG Awards will cut down on their usual running time by going without a host so, no opening monologue , getting rid of the red carpet, and they won t have a set. What will be included in the hour-long show is the announcement of 13 category winners. There s 15 categories at the SAG Awards, which you can see here. Variety doesn t say which categories are getting the shaft, so all the nominees of the two Best Stunt Performance categories shouldn t cancel their tuxedo rentals just yet. There will also be an In Memoriam segment, something the Golden Globe Awards wasn t able to cram into their three-hour-long ceremony. As for how they ll pre-tape the winners without spoiling anything, they re reportedly sticking to the honor system:
Days before the broadcast, nominees from each category will gather together in their own Zoom room, where the winner will be revealed and can give their acceptance speech. That means, in a departure from normal protocol for the show, winners and their category mates will know the results days before the rest of the world sees them on the SAG Awards telecast.
We hope they respect the show enough and everybody does, and their fellow actors, that they don t want to disappoint the audience at home by letting any surprises go.
The SAG Awards still have a month to figure everything out, and according to Todd Milliner, they re doing just that. Like busting out the calculators and doing some math on how to divide up those precious 60 minutes. Maybe the producers of 60 Minutes can help? They re used to doing it. The SAG Awards also plan to keep their trademark I Am An Actor segments, which are short little first-person direct-to-camera stories about how actors became actors. Honestly, it s best those get the pre-taped treatment. There s nobody in this world who wants to watch Frances McDormand spend three whole minutes interrupting her own story about how she got her SAG card by repeatedly wondering out loud if her internet s web camera is on.
