Rory MacDonald says Colby Covington is the low part of the MMA world : It s a sad time

Get the Full StoryRory MacDonald isn t a fan of UFC welterweight contender Colby Covington. Colby Covington has a welterweight fighter not even in the UFC talking about him.

Rory MacDonald, who challenges champ Douglas Lima for the Bellator title on Saturday, isn t a fan of Chaos. When the Canadian was recently asked on The Ragin MMA Podcast what his low point of 2017 in MMA was, he had one name in mind.

I guess the low part of the MMA world would probably be Colby Covington, just the fact that he is getting so much attention, MacDonald said. It doesn t get to me too much, but it s definitely a sad time for the MMA world.

Covington, of course, made waves in the news late last year after besting former welterweight title challenger and jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia by decision in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In his controversial post-fight interview, the rising star called the city a dump and its residents filthy animals.

A month later, in November, he was involved in an altercation with former Brazilian heavyweight champ Fabricio Werdum as a guest fighter in Sydney, Australia. Werdum threw a boomerang at Covington and was charged with assault.

Since the Maia win, which extended Covington s winning streak to five in a row, the American Top Team fighter has constantly called out UFC 170-pound titleholder Tyron Woodley, who s currently recovering from shoulder surgery.

MacDonald said Covington doesn t deserve the next title shot against The Chosen One. Rafael dos Anjos would be a better option, he said.

That would be unfortunate if Covington fights Woodley next , but he did beat Demian Maia I know it wasn t Maia s best performance so that s an accomplishment, so I gotta give it to him for that, MacDonald said. But at the same time, I think Maia fought with emotion and not with his brain like he usually does when he s successful.

MacDonald faces Lima in the Bellator 192 co-main event. The event takes place at The Forum in Inglewood, California and is headlined by a Bellator heavyweight Grand Prix bout between Chael Sonnen and Quinton Rampage Jackson.
