Fede Alvarez Says Evil Dead 2 Will Probably Happen With The Right Story

Get the Full StoryFor those of us interested in another installment of gory grandiosity, the frequency in which filmmaker Fede Alvarez is discussing his plan for an Evil Dead sequel is rapidly increasing. True, there was virtually nothing but radio silence regarding an Evil Dead 2 following the cancellation announcement of Ash vs. Evil Dead – effectively resulting in the retirement of Bruce Campbell from the titular role – but since then, there’s been a faint sign of life or two.

Coinciding with the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia last week, a Twitter user struck a bargain with the director, stipulating that should Uruguay emerge victorious from the event, Alvarez would have to make Evil Dead 2.

Before that, the last we heard of a possible sequel came roughly a month before from the filmmaker himself, who queried followers and fans apropos of whether or not they d be interested in seeing him helm a follow-up to the surprisingly sufficient 2013 remake. Granted, those in favor made their voices heard, but The Girl in the Spider’s Web director hasn t provided any additional information about the sequel until now.

During a sit-down with Entertainment Weekly, Alvarez discussed the possibility of an Evil Dead 2. Thankfully, the Don t Breath helmer says he’s in love with those Evil Dead movies, but will only make another if there’s a “good story to tell.

Look, I love those movies. Making my Evil Dead was an amazing experience, it was my first film. So, going back at some point will be a possibility. I mean, I m really good friends with all those guys, with Bruce, and director Sam Raimi , and producer Rob Tapert . So, we always chat about it.

“The good news and I think that s what sometimes people don t understand is, none of those guys will make any of these movies just because they can, just because it s good business. They will only make it if they believe they have some good story to tell. A lot of people say that in this industry, but most of the time it s not true.

“With those guys, all of us involved in those movies, we will just make them if we believe there s a story that has to be told, and is awesome, and is great, and we believe that it will be better than anything that will be done before in that world. When we find that story, when we all agree on what it is, it will probably happen.

In the meantime, while we impatiently wait for the Uruguayan filmmaker to get the ball rolling on Evil Dead 2, next up for Alvarez is the aforementioned The Girl in the Spider’s Web, starring Claire Foy The Crown . Scheduled for a November 9th release later this year, expect the crime drama to make an appearance on the summer film festival circuit.
