Jimmy Buffett Confused Football Enthusiasts With An Unearned Mic Drop After Singing The National Anthem
Get the Full StoryThe big National Sporting Event is fast approaching. Gladys Knight will perform the thankless task of singing The Star Spangled Banner aka The National Anthem. But before that can happen, some other people had to sing that song in front of a crowd of football enthusiasts cum judges of vocal talent. At last night s playoff game between the Los Angeles Goat Men and the New Orleans Man Angels, Jimmy Buffett put his margarita down long enough to take a stab at one of the most notoriously impossible songs to sing well. But he was either too drunk or not drunk enough. Who knows, two more margaritas and he might have been in the pocket. Two fewer, and he might not have performed a wholly unearned mic drop. The only person who s ever earned the right to drop the mic after singing The National Anthem was Fergie Whitney gave us something transcendent and doesn t need to be dragged into this conversation .Football enthusiasts were confused by Jimmy s actions. He posted his big finish on both Instagram and Twitter like he was super proud of what he d done. But the people wanted to know, should he be? .

People wanted to know, did Jimmy really think he nailed it like that? Was he making some sort of political statement? Some younger football enthusiasts even asked, who? . People tried to supply some answers. They say Jimmy is a lifelong fan of the sports team called The New Orleans Saints. In his IG post, he said it was an honor to sing that song for the Man Angels team and even included an American Flag emoji, which to me, indicates some level of patriotism. Would a patriot openly mock our National Anthem? The answer is yes, I would, but I don t think that s Jimmy s style And unlike Fergie, Jimmy s version was just regular bad instead of spectacularly bad, therefore any show of accomplishment in this case, dropping the mic is inappropriate. Additionally, he previously posted pictures indicating that he had been practicing the song in some sort of rehearsal situation.

If Jimmy had sung as he did yesterday, and had never practiced or even heard the song before, then by all means, he earned that mic drop. That would have been quite a feat! But that s clearly not the case. He had practiced at least one day prior to his performance. It just doesn t add up!
Until Jimmy is ready to speak on this controversy, I think the National Sporting Event should be delayed. How do we know Gladys Knight isn t planning some crazy stunt like ending the song by shaking dead butterflies out of her wig or reaching down to pull off her tearaway Magic Mike pants as subtle commentary on bodily autonomy vis a vis the Janet Justin controversy of 2004? America ain t ready for it, I tell you! We simply cannot take any more surprises.
