Open Post: Hosted By The First Look At Steven Spielberg s West Side Story

Get the Full StoryI ll admit, I was extremely hesitant and skeptical when I heard about Steven Spielberg s remake of West Side Story. Obviously it couldn t hold a candle to the original, but Steven Spielberg wanted to try to remake it, and as long as he made sure his version didn t include lip syncing or a Maria in brownface, he d probably do an ok job. Amblin tweeted the first image from their West Side Story remake today, and here s what the Jets, Sharks, Tony and Maria look like.

Spielberg s West Side Story comes out in 2020, and stars Ansel Elgort as Tony, who is giving off the vibe of a douchebag who blew his monthly trust fund allowance on a 1950s capsule collection by Vetements but that could just be Ansel Elgort s standard operating vibe .

He s joined by open casting call winner Rachel Zegler as Maria. I m sure her costume is historically accurate, since Spielberg is kind of a stickler for that. But with that brown cardigan and sad, plain brown knee-length skirt, she kind of looks like the prettiest girl at The Duggar s church. Actually, someone Photoshop a Christian rock band t-shirt on Ansel, crop out everyone else, and replace the background with a weathered barn fence, and I m pretty sure you ve got a Duggar engagement photo shoot.

This kind of looks boring and safe. But then again, if I wanted a West Side Story mess that craps all over the original source material, I can always revisit those GAP commercials.
