Police Don t Know If They ll Ever Find Naya Rivera

Get the Full StoryNaya Rivera went missing on Wednesday afternoon during a boat trip with her 4-year-old son Josey Hollis Dorsey on Lake Piru in Ventura County, CA. Josey was found alone and asleep on the boat at around 4:45 pm and that s when the search for Naya began. Josey told the police that his mom went swimming and never came out of the water. Search crews searched on Wednesday until it got dark and searched all day yesterday. On Wednesday night, there were reports that Ventura County Sheriff s Dept. believed that Naya had drowned. And yesterday, Sgt. Kevin Donoghue said in a press conference that they re not sure if her body will ever be recovered, which is just more heartbreaking sadness wrapped in heartbreaking sadness.

Wikipedia tells me that the surface area of Lake Piru is 1,240 acres and its max depth is 130 feet. It s also not a natural lake. It s a manmade reservoir. Police say that it s practically a forest at the bottom of Lake Piru because there s a lot of brush and trees down there. When the search ended for the day on Wednesday after the night rolled in, some people on Twitter suddenly became seasoned environmental forensic detectives and screamed at the Ventura County Sheriff s Dept. s Twitter page to get a waterproof flashlight and search for her through the night. But according to Sgt. Donoghue, when you go underwater at Lake Piru, you suddenly become me without my glasses on shit, you suddenly become me WITH my glasses on . You can t see shit, even during the daytime. The visibility is not good, which makes the search extremely hard. via People

During a press conference on Thursday addressing Rivera s disappearance, Ventura County Sheriff s Office Sgt. Kevin Donoghue said: If the body is entangled in something underneath the water it may never come up.

We don t know, he added.

Due to the conditions of Lake Piru, Donoghue said the search for Rivera is complicated.

He explained that at this time, the visibility of the lake is not very good, it s terrible.

There s a lot of trees and plants and such that are under the water that can cause entanglement. Makes it unsafe for divers and a complicated search, he said.

One diver involved in the search said that it s kind of like a braille search because they can only see around 1 foot in front of them and they have to search by touching.

Detectives have also searched the shoreline for footprints and have checked Naya s credit cards for any activity. Her purse was on the boat and her SUV was still in the parking lot. Because there s no evidence that she made it to shore, they re focusing their search in the reservoir. Police also said that Naya had been to Lake Piru before.

Naya is not the first person to go missing at Lake Piru. Since 1994, there have been at least 9 drowning deaths at Lake Piru. At least one victim was wearing a life jacket at the time of his drowning. Naya s son had a life jacket on but it doesn t look like Naya was wearing a life jacket while swimming because an adult-sized one was found on the boat.

For years, locals have been asking for the city to put up warning signs around Lake Piru to let people know that it s dangerous for swimming. A Change.org petition was set up to once again scream at the city to do something already.

Lake Piru is a very deep lake with very bad whirlpools, people have been asking for years for the city to put up warning signs for swimmers. Locals of Ventura County don t go to Lake Piru for this reason! Tourists have no idea what they re getting into. Lake Piru needs signs. We re tired of waiting. We need justice for all those who got lost at Lake Piru. Put up the signs.

Authorities also released this very sad video of Naya and Josey arriving at Lake Piru and renting a pontoon boat before going out onto the water.
