HBO Max Is Reportedly Bringing Magic Back to TV With an Upcoming Harry Potter Series

Get the Full StoryThe magical wizarding world of Harry Potter won't stop with the big screen! On Jan. 25, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that HBO Max is developing a series inspired by the long-standing franchise and, although no writers or talent have been attached to the project, plans are moving forward. THR reports that HBO Max and Warner Bros. are in the extremely early stages, and no deals have been made.

It's not a surprise that Warner Bros. is looking to expand the Harry Potter universe since the fandom is still booming to this day. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows in the Harry Potter world; any new projects within the franchise face extra scrutiny depending on how involved creator J.K. Rowling will be. The author has sparked backlash from fans and peers alike after doubling down on numerous transphobic comments. There's no word on how much Rowling will be involved in the conception or execution of the series although, according to THR, she still "controls the franchise and has a say in everything involving the property."

Since the series is reportedly still in the beginnings of development, we can only guess its focus. Will it be part of the original books' timeline, travel back in time for the Marauders' time, or move forward to tackle the next generation of witches and wizards? Considering the success of big-ticket franchise spinoffs like The Mandalorian and the recently released WandaVision, we aren't shocked Warner Bros. is trying to get in on the action!
