And don t worry, guys, the Department of Justice has already assured us that this is totally not bribery. Trust them. They did the math. The plane by Qatar royal family is now being handed over to the U.S. government for use as Air Force One, but there s a catch. Once Trump leaves office, the plane will be transferred to his presidential library foundation. The 400 million jet will become part of Trump s legacy. It s a pretty straightforward rule, designed to prevent exactly this kind of thing: foreign governments currying favor with U.S. leaders by showering them with expensive gifts. But Trump s DOJ, led by Attorney General Pam Bondi yes, the same Bondi who once dropped an investigation into Trump University after receiving a campaign donation from Trump s foundation you can t make this stuff up , says it s all perfectly legal. Why? Because the gift isn t conditioned on any official act. The logic here is that because Qatar didn t explicitly say, Hey, here s a plane, now please invade our enemies or approve our arms deals, it s not a bribe. It s just a friendly little gesture between pals! Never mind that Qatar has spent years lobbying the U.S. for favorable treatment, from military deals to geopolitical support. Never mind that the plane will eventually become Trump s personal legacy item. Nope, nothing to see here, folks. Move along. Look, you don t need a law degree to see what s wrong with this picture. This isn t just a bad look it s a neon billboard flashing CORRUPTION! in 60-foot-high letters. The fact that the DOJ had to preemptively draft a whole legal defense to justify this arrangement tells you everything you need to know. They knew this would raise eyebrows. The Emoluments Clause is supposed to protect us from this kind of blatant corruption, but laws are only as strong as the people enforcing them. When those in power are more interested in exploiting loopholes than upholding principles, the whole system falls apart. Maybe we should add a new wing to Trump s presidential library.
